CHAPTER 23

FACING THE ODDS

Fin trudged up to the castle with his hands pressed in his pockets, his steps slow and heavy.

Annika eventually had told him enough about the queen’s condition for him to realize the gravity of the situation. She had also revealed that to cover their backsides, he still needed to talk to Jiho to firmly eliminate any controversy over Lady Iones’s marriage being acceptable to the Zinferan emperor.

Fin had left Annika’s estate with the intention of both trying to talk with his friend, as well as to keep an ear out for news regarding the queen.

Kraken trotted alongside the redhead for part of the journey before veering off on his own. Fin was too lost in his own thoughts to think much on his familiar’s vibrantly independent life.

As he stepped onto the castle grounds, he felt his magic surge through him, and then …

It started.

Fin stumbled and clutched his head as multiple terrified feelings and images flashed through his mind.

The queen was in so much pain … her fear and agony rang the loudest in his head, and all at once he understood why Annika’s panic was so poignant.

Breaking out into a run, Fin charged toward his kitchen, his mind racing with the dread and despair of the castle occupants …

They were all so heartbroken …

His feet pounded down the grass as a new person’s intense fear broke into the flurry—and it made the witch need to stop and clutch his chest to catch his breath.

Eric.

Eric was terrified, shouting, and crying.

Giving his head a shake, Fin tried to quiet the clamor in his head; he needed to help.

The cook began to move once more, his heart hammering in his chest, as he dashed down the east wall to his kitchen.

He needed to hear what was happening from his aides.

Rounding the garden edge, Fin bolted up the pathway and burst into the kitchen that was in complete chaos. Ruby stood by the hearth waiting for water to boil, and a team of maids and knights stood at the ready to help haul the buckets upstairs.

His arrival was almost completely missed, even by Hannah, Peter, and the kitchen knights who stood off to the side talking as they worked on preparing what looked like seaweed.

The sight of the long smelly plant only added to Fin’s anxiety.

Katelyn ordered seaweed soup to be made for mothers who had given birth.

This meant she thought the babe was going to arrive soon.

“Mr. Ashowan!” Ruby’s startled voice snapped Fin out of his panic. “What are you doing here? You aren’t due to return until—”

“My mother is with the queen?” he demanded while moving swiftly toward the castle door.

“Yes, she is, but— Where do you think you’re going?!” Ruby was hot on his heels as he exited the kitchen and moved through the halls that were deathly silent.

“Eric must be upset. I’m going to check on him and then see if I can help my mother. I’ve been her aide since I was a child and can help.
